Probate records are most times a wonderful resource for family historians. Types of documents you may find in probate records include: wills, guardianship, estate inventories and sales, named heirs, description of land, and much more. In years past, when a person died, their estate was assessed to request monies due to the decedent and to fulfill his debts to creditors, and then disburse any real or personal property. Those who died without a will had an intestate probate. If the assets reached a certain amount, then the possessions were disbursed.
The gold mine in probate records is found in the wealth of names associated with the estate. Common relationships mentioned typically include a spouse, children, siblings, grandchildren, friends, and acquaintances. What a thrill to find a testator wrote his will and included full names and relationships!
This is just a very brief overview of what one may find in probate records and why they are important to review and analyze. I will share more examples in the future.
